Eisa Drum Festival celebrates Okinawan culture

Kapiolani Community College is hosting the 3rd Eisa Drum Festival on Saturday, May 11 from 5:30 to 9 pm on the Great Lawn at the center of campus.

The outdoor festival brings together food prepared by KCC’s culinary program and the spectacular art form of taiko performed amid the beauty of Diamond Head under the stars. The program begins at 6 pm. The event is free and open to the public, with ample parking on campus.

Performers include Chinagu Eisa Hawaii, Hawaii Okinawa Creative Arts, Hawaii Taiko Kai, Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate and Urizun Minyo Group. This year’s festival also features special guest performers from Okinawa, including Daiichi Hirata, acclaimed producer, choreographer, and musician, as well as members of Requios, the 2012 World Eisa Competition winner.

Hawaii students to build, play ukulele

Children on the island of Lanai will soon build and strum their own ukuleles and Hawaiian lap steel guitars, courtesy the Lanai Art Center and Waianu’s Hale Kuai of Honolulu.

The ‘O Ka La Na‘i Nui program, to be held at the Lanai Art Center during the second week of August, will engage fourth and sixth graders in hands-on workshops that promote Hawaiian culture and encourage students to pursue vocational opportunities in Hawaii.

Local rockers bring on the hooks for debut album

The local hard rockers Kilroy thrive on guitar riffs and lyrical hooks to drive their success. The band looks at different sources of inspiration for their 12 track debut album “Something’s Gotta Give,” due out in December 2010.

Kilroy’s music leaves the listener feeling a sense of familiarity. The listener hears a song that is not immediately recognized and it doesn’t sound like anything they have heard in a while. Then it hits the listener, the sound of guitar driven riffs and hard rock beats that are synonymous with hard rock & roll music.
